OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The next step in Union Omaha’s new stadium is now complete.

A release from the City of Omaha says the $18.9 million purchase of “Home Plate,” a 25-acre property in north downtown, has been purchased from Union Pacific on Friday.

“Two words: Home run,” said Mayor John Ewing. “This purchase puts us at the plate, pun most definitely intended, to swing for the fences on creating a more exciting Omaha.”

The plot’s moniker alludes to its proximity to Charles Schwab Field, home of the College World Series.

The property was previously used to park historical rail cars for special events. According to the release, UP will retain access to six acres around its rails as through an easement as part of the deal.

“Union Pacific has proudly called Omaha home for more than 160 years, and we want to thank the City of Omaha for its partnership,” said Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena. “We look forward to this new development, which enhances an already great community where our employees are proud to live and work.”

Omaha intends to do the following with the property:

  • Build the $140 million stadium and mixed-use development and lease it to Union Omaha
  • Construct major city infrastructure, including sewer treatment facility
  • Link the North Downtown district with downtown by connecting 11th Street north of Cuming Street with 10th Street south of Cuming.

Union Omaha’s stadium is expected to have 6,500 seats, with a capacity of around 8,500 including standing-only spaces.

“We are excited to be one step closer to realizing a home for professional soccer in downtown Omaha,” Alexis Boulos, Chief Operating Officer of Union Omaha said.

“With bases loaded, we stand literally at ‘Home Plate,’” Ewing said, “ready to hit a grand slam.”
